A group of women trying to figure out what to do invites JANE members to discuss ideas, memories, and strategies. A great starting point for our own discussions about what to do about the increasing limitations on abortion access. – Cindy Crabb

Lindsy Draws

Name: Lindsay Draws

Email:

Description: The name of my shop and blog is taken from a line in the song Sawdust and Diamonds by Joanna Newsom. She sings about “a little white dove made with love; made with glue, a glove and some plyers”. Having always produced things for the love of making them, I felt an affinity with the unnamed protagonist who made that little white dove.

I am a self-taught diy craftswoman from the Midwest of the US currently living in the East End of London. I never could narrow down what kind of art I wanted to make, which is why I never went to art school. Instead, I decided I could teach myself to do lots of different creative processes and enjoy the freedom it gives me to explore new things all the time.

For my print based work, I combine radical and oral history as well as social justice issues with illustration and design. I’m currently working on a long-term oral history zine project with my family to uncover the life of my uncle who died when I was a teenager.

I make functional pottery that incorporates various foraged materials, from volcanic Icelandic sand to clays that I dig myself. I see these vessels as a physical record of my travels – or just restorative day trips from London – with each pot having its own unique story to tell.

I’m also training to become a joiner and am loving working with wood, a new medium for me. You can read more about most of the work I do on my blog.

M

Matt Gauck

Name: Matt Gauck

Email:

Description: I ride my bicycle really long distances. I draw even more. I care about being responsible to the earth in a variety of ways. If I could get away with it, I’d just print one patch that read “please think harder”, with a drawing of me spitting on / pooping on / farting near a building reading “Every Corporation on the Planet”. Here’s proof that I draw things:

I draw all the art myself for my patches, and those containing photos have been manipulated by me to work for printing. Halftones rule! Therefore, all the art on these patches is mine, and if you’d like to use it, I would greatly appreciate an email. Thank you!

I also write a zine about the wacky travel situations called “next stop adventure”. Keep it D.I.Y.! Thank you for supporting independent art! If you have any questions, comments, or ANYTHING SERIOUSLY please email me, I’m completely serious when I promise I will respond to anything you throw at me. Well, anything genuine, that is. I can also do handstands reasonably well.

Michelle / BusyWeekends

Name: Michelle

Email:

PO Box:

Description: I write stories about my life, the world I know, and the lessons I’ve learned.

I’ve been a zine person since middle school 2010. I found out about zines in middle school and bought a few here and there throughout the next decade (plus a few years), but I never really understood what zines were or that there was an entire culture bubbling under those words. In early 2010, I made my first zine, and I finally grasped the depth of what it means to be a zine person. Since then, I have written too many zines and read hundreds.

I used to write Letters to My Therapist but now mainly people find me when they’re looking for Creativity for Introverts. I also wrote Self-Care for Creatives. I tend to focus much of my writing on encouraging creativity and inspiring others; however, I do have a perzine or two up my sleeves.

I will never stop writing.

Busy Weekends serves as a creative playground, an outlet for things like little projects, ideas, wonderful stuff I’ve found, and mail. You can find me on Etsy where I sell zines, kits, and other small projects.

I live in Alexandria, VA, which is just outside of DC. I only have to walk 5 minutes to see Maryland, DC, and VA in one glance. I keep up with rent and food working in content management at a university. I love my job. I’m also studying Distance Education part time, which unfortunately takes a lot of energy away from creating things for my shop, but I’m very much enjoying it.

Megan Twiddy/ Eliza Agar Press

Name: Megan Twiddy

Email:

Description: “One does not always stay intact.” – JB

Eliza Agar Press started with the publication of Hate Letters, an attempt to re-centre victims’ perspectives on the abuse(s) committed upon them.

Eliza Agar was a woman who performed vital services for women outside the law in the 1930s and 1940s. She was falsely imprisoned and maligned. She sought to improve the conditions of working class women, and disregarded the potentially devastating costs to her own safety from the state.

Eliza Agar Press seek to empower marginalised perspectives, and give voice to victim/survivors. We publish zines on feminism, mental health and abuse from our queer, working-class perspective. We are not always intact, but we stick together.

Ocean Capewell

Website: oceancapewell.tumblr.com/

Name: Ocean Capewell

Email:

Description: ocean capewell used to get in trouble for answering the phone rudely when she was in the middle of writing a story. her parents’ friends were horrified at the snarled, “what??!!”, not knowing what they were interrupting, not knowing how hard it is to get started again when you’re interrupted in the midst of inspiration. now she has a cell phone and lives alone, and misses being so completely wrapped up in writing that nothing came before it. she is trying to get back to that pure place: seven years old & writing in notebooks until her hand was sore, going so fast, trying to get it all down.

Short story (fiction) by the amazing Suzy Subways. Suzy is a really good writer. This story I don’t exactly know how to descibe – it is about a person who is basically imprisioned, living in a part of a bridge with someone who makes propaganda. Sometimes she gets out – turning into rat and sneeking out. The whole story is kind of creepy and really intriguing and seems like it’s symolic for various policial and emotional and realtional things.- Cindy Crabb

Takru Dearest/ Vampire Sushi Distro

Name: Takru Dearest

Email:

Description: hello, i am tukru dearest. i’m a 33 year old finnish immigrant / ex-pat living in medway in kent, south eastern england. i’ve been here for about 12 years, came to study photography and kinda never left. oops. i kinda fell in love with a local boy and besides, i didn’t really have much to go home to. besides getting all my crap back to finland just didn’t seem like worth the effort. i do sometimes wonder what things would be like if i’d gone back / never left but ifs and but(t)s and coconuts.

by day i work very part time in a little photoshop in the local shopping center and take all the passport photos and process people’s holiday etc snaps and put their old videos on to dvd and generally resurrect the past in some form everyday. woo. i much prefer it to my old job (selling toys on ebay for a local independent toy shop and putting up with constant bullshit from someone i had to share the office with. now i just put up with the occasional bullshit with the occasional arsehole customer.) and it’s kinda relevant to my degree (BA in photography) even if it’s just part time and minimum wage. (though i’m always looking for something else because i’m sick of retail)

by night i’m a zinester extraordinaire and a distro mistress. i mainly write a perzine called your pretty face is going straight to hell, and i run a little zine distro called vampire sushi distro. those are my main loves ♥ i’ve been making zines for 15+ years, ever since i first read about riot grrrl and, throught that, zines on the internets back in my mid-to-late teens. i made my first (maybe first two or three even?) without actually having seen a zine in real life cos those were the days before paypal and i had to go all the way to helsinki to get my hands on foreign currency to send off as payment. my first few efforts were mostly full of flowery fiction, as i didn’t really have much life experience to write about (at least as far as i thought back then) i had a few years off while at uni, but i started writing your pretty face in 2006 after a graduated, though i’d wanted to start again in my 3rd year when i rekindled my love for zines and even ended up doing my dissertation on perzines, but didn’t really have the time to work on a zine on top of my final work. as i write this, i’ve done about 22 issues of pretty face and about 30 odd zines all together over the years. and i still think i could do more. i dont think i’ll ever do enough in my opinion.

i do a lot of knitting and crocheting because at heart i’m a big old grandma ♥ i also try my hand at all sorts of other crafty things but never finish thing. i draw sometimes, and occasionally i sell those drawings. i also try to play bass in a band but it’s seems harder to get things going that you’d think. since my old band sean bean death scene went on hiatus and never came back i’ve hard at least 3 false starts on new bands and i’ve got something starting again but there were more false starts but we are hopefully figuring it out and will finally be ok to play probably in the new year (stupid working in retail in december) i’m also fat babe and i love fashion but i’m also always broke. i finally got a sewing machine last year but i haven’t managed to make myself anything yet because i’m terrified i will just waste my charity shopped fabric because some pattern i got on the sale doesn’t fit me right or i fuck it up.
