It took a lot of searching to find any writing at all on themes that could be directly useful for men who were survivors of adult sexual assault. So I though it necessary to put together a list here, hopefully so others won’t have to go the effort I went to or give up trying.

This could be the entirety of books published on the subject. Support

an anthology I put together about supporting abuse survivors. A lot of people have written to me and said that this helped them identify as survivors, and to find a way forward in their lives, find ways to change their patterns and find support and healing. This zine includes the consent questions that Andrea, Able and I came up with, and they are great way for people to start talking about consent, either with their partner(s) or with their friends.This zine is not just for survivors, but is also for people who are friends and partners with survivors, to help them understand. From Pain to Violence: The traumatic roots of destructiveness. Felicity du Zuluetta

In this book Felicity de Zuluetta – begins by defining “violence” as distinct from “aggression”, and then attempts to trace its origins, highlighting the polarization between those who believe mankind to be innately violent and those who see violence as the outcome of man’s life experiences. As a result of her investigations, the author suggests that the current high level of violence may well be linked to the effects of childhood and adult trauma which appear to be far more widespread than has hitherto been acknowledged. Male Rape: Ritchie McMullen

McMullen became aware of how hidden and unreported this crime was and how deeply scarred it left its victims. He realised that the taboo had to be brought out into the open and youth workers and counsellors needed to know how to respond to victims and help them move on from the self-loathing that often followed an attack.

This book – widely acknowledged as the first on its subject – was the result. His research confirmed the notion that rape is not about sex but about power. And far from being a straight nightmare about predatory homosexuals, it was most often a crime carried out by heterosexuals on gay men – linked to bullying and to a violent masculinity that wanted to assert itself over what was seen as weak or effeminate.

This book helped me to acknowledge my own abuse and lessen the shame I felt for a long time. I didn’t think others had had the same kind things happen to them, and I began to finally look at all that had happened to me. I found a lot of striking similarities in the various stories. Perceptions of male victims in depicted sexual assaults: A review of the literature

In recent years there has been a steady increase in the amount of literature on perceptions of male victim of sexual assault. Much of this research focuses around the concept of victim blame. This paper reviews the research on perceptions of male victims of sexual assault, with particular reference to victim blame for male rape. The paper considers the conceptual differences in types of blame in relation to male rape. It also offers to extend the traditional feminist interpretation of victim blame to explain blame toward male as well as female victims. Perceptions of male victims of male and female perpetrators are considered, as are both adult and child victims. The paper concludes by outlining some suggestions for future work and implications for treatment of male victims of sexual assault.

The first edition was influential in affording legal recognition to male victims of rape in England and Wales and this has resulted in raised awareness of the problem and improved attitudes among all those responsible for dealing with the victims. This recognition has gone some way to breaking down the taboo, and has allowed the discussion to move on and address the important issues of prevention, care and treatment. The book reports on the first epidemiological study of male sexual victimization in Europe, challenges the prevailing stereotype of gay men as sexual predators, covers the topic of male rape in prisons, examines the link between early sexual victimization and later perpetration, describes how victims of sexual torture attempt to process and resolve such experiences, provides the historical and anthropological background to the subject, and examines the impact of the changes in legislation.
