Men’s Survivor Resources

It took a lot of searching to find any writing at all on themes that could be directly useful for men who were survivors of adult sexual assault. So I though it necessary to put together a list here, hopefully so others won’t have to go the effort I went to or give up trying.

This could be the entirety of books published on the subject. The first half of the texts are free downloadable pdfs, just click on the title to open your pdf document in a new tab, or right click and hit save target to download. The second half of this post includes links mostly leading to amazon. Please share and keep this list in mind if you know of anyone struggling with the issues covered below.

99Support

an anthology I put together about supporting abuse survivors. A lot of people have written to me and said that this helped them identify as survivors, and to find a way forward in their lives, find ways to change their patterns and find support and healing. This zine includes the consent questions that Andrea, Able and I came up with, and they are great way for people to start talking about consent, either with their partner(s) or with their friends. This zine is not just for survivors, but is also for people who are friends and partners with survivors, to help them understand. For ‘Professionals’

Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault: A Forensic HandbookDrug-Facilitated Sexual Assault: A Forensic Handbook
From Academic Press

Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault looks at the history of these crimes over the years and includes an in-depth discussion of the drugs and drug classes in use today. It describes the effects of these drugs on the victims, the type of person who uses drugs to sexually assault an individual, and obstacles to investigating the suspect. The authors show how to properly collect and analyze evidence, overcome some of the unique difficulties encountered in these types of investigations, and work with other professionals to prosecute these cases successfully.

merry_go_roundThe Merry-go round of sexual abuse: Identifying and treating Survivors. William E Prendergrast.

The Merry-Go-Round of Sexual Abuse is a valuable guide to identifying, treating, and breaking the cycle of sexual abuse. Based on 30 years of professional experience in treating offenders and survivors of sexual assault and sexual molestation, Dr. Prendergast provides step-by-step guidelines and specialized treatment techniques most effective in producing change in this group of clients. Each technique is illustrated with pertinent case studies. This is a much-needed guide for professionals who often lack specific training in the identification and treatment of both offenders and survivors of sexual abuse. (Publisher comment).

Psychodynamic Perspectives on Abuse: The cost of fear. Una McClusky, Carol-Ann Hopper.

psy_perspec_abuseAbuse is defined broadly and considered as a widespread phenomenon with a variety of manifestations and contexts. Its consequences, and the responses it may provoke, are discussed in detail with reference to three areas. In the personal context, the impact of abuse on an individual’s development, emotional life and ability to participate in society is addressed. In the workplace, where the focus is upon working relationships and organizational goals, abuse may cause stress, undermine effectiveness and lead to legal redress: thus it involves a different set of problems and requires different treatment. In relation to society as a whole, the threat which abuse poses and the factors which determine policy are evaluated. (Publisher comment).

From Pain to Violence: The traumatic roots of destructiveness. Felicity du Zuluetta

pain2Violence is all around us; yet, despite its widespread prevalence, we remain unclear about its causes. In this book Felicity de Zuluetta – begins by defining “violence” as distinct from “aggression”, and then attempts to trace its origins, highlighting the polarization between those who believe mankind to be innately violent and those who see violence as the outcome of man’s life experiences. As a result of her investigations, the author suggests that the current high level of violence may well be linked to the effects of childhood and adult trauma which appear to be far more widespread than has hitherto been acknowledged. These findings are relevant to understanding why “normal” people can become violent in certain conditions. This is a second edition and has been fully updated. A new chapter on terrorism has been added. (Publisher comment)

male_rape_n_khanMale Rape the emergence of a social and legal issue. Noreen Abdullah-Khan.

‘Although the topic of male rape is receiving increasing research interest in the forensic, clinical and social psychological literature, there are currently very few academic texts relating to this issue. I applaud Dr. Abdullah-Kahn for under-taking this timely and potentially very useful book.’ Dr. Michelle Davies, Senior Lecturer of Psychology, University of Central Lancashire, UK

Male Rape: Ritchie McMullen

McMullen became aware of how hidden and unreported this crime was and how deeply scarred it left its victims. He realised that the taboo had to be brought out into the open and youth workers and counsellors needed to know how to respond to victims and help them move on from the self-loathing that often followed an attack.

This book – widely acknowledged as the first on its subject – was the result. His research confirmed the notion that rape is not about sex but about power. And far from being a straight nightmare about predatory homosexuals, it was most often a crime carried out by heterosexuals on gay men – linked to bullying and to a violent masculinity that wanted to assert itself over what was seen as weak or effeminate.

Male On Male Rape: The Hidden Toll Of Stigma And ShameMale on Male Rape: Michael Scarce

This book helped me to acknowledge my own abuse and lessen the shame I felt for a long time. I didn’t think others had had the same kind things happen to them, and I began to finally look at all that had happened to me. I found a lot of striking similarities in the various stories. I had no idea how prevalent sexual abuse really is. May all abuse victims find solace and find a way through the pain and shame and derive some healing (Anonymous comment).

Bobby Carapisi, Vol. 1
By Kyle Michel Sullivan

Bobby Carapisi, Vol. 1That night started out bad for Eric Larsen. He was a struggling actor waiting tables at a small restaurant and had been dealing with cheap, obnoxious jerks all evening. Then Allen Barrow strolled in the door and was nice and left a big tip – and Eric felt his luck had turned. What he didn’t realize was that turn would be for the worse. Which happened as he headed home. And was kidnapped. And sexually assaulted. And treated as though he was nothing but a male whore hired to service three johns. The opposite was true for Bobby Carapisi. His world was perfect – with a wife and child and another baby on the way, with his dream job as a relief pitcher going beautifully, and with his future in baseball full of promise. But then his wife wanted some lime sherbet, late one night. So he jaunted out to get it. And wound up being taken through the same horror as Eric. By the same three men. But this time with even worse brutality. And all because he made a snap decision to go to this store instead of that one. What neither man realized was, their ordeals had only just begun.

Perceptions of male victims in depicted sexual assaults: A review of the literature [An article from: Aggression and Violent Behavior]In recent years there has been a steady increase in the amount of literature on perceptions of male victim of sexual assault. Much of this research focuses around the concept of victim blame. This paper reviews the research on perceptions of male victims of sexual assault, with particular reference to victim blame for male rape. The paper considers the conceptual differences in types of blame in relation to male rape. It also offers to extend the traditional feminist interpretation of victim blame to explain blame toward male as well as female victims. Perceptions of male victims of male and female perpetrators are considered, as are both adult and child victims. The paper concludes by outlining some suggestions for future work and implications for treatment of male victims of sexual assault.

Male Victims of Sexual Assault (Oxford Medical Publications)

Male Victims of Sexual Assault (Oxford Medical Publications)The first edition was influential in affording legal recognition to male victims of rape in England and Wales and this has resulted in raised awareness of the problem and improved attitudes among all those responsible for dealing with the victims. This recognition has gone some way to breaking down the taboo, and has allowed the discussion to move on and address the important issues of prevention, care and treatment. The book reports on the first epidemiological study of male sexual victimization in Europe, challenges the prevailing stereotype of gay men as sexual predators, covers the topic of male rape in prisons, examines the link between early sexual victimization and later perpetration, describes how victims of sexual torture attempt to process and resolve such experiences, provides the historical and anthropological background to the subject, and examines the impact of the changes in legislation.

Sexual Assault and the Justice Gap: A Question of Attitude by Barbara Krahe (Author), Jennifer Temkin

Sexual Assault and the Justice Gap: A Question of Attitude (Criminal Law Library)This book is set against the background of the so-called ‘justice gap’ in sexual assault cases. It represents an interdisciplinary attempt to examine the attitudinal problems which bedevil this area of law and to offer possible strategies for addressing them. Written by a professor of law and a professor of psychology, Sexual Assault and the Justice Gap reviews evidence from both socio-legal and social cognition research examining the impact of rape-related attitudes on judgements about sexual offenses. It presents new qualitative data from interviews with judges and barristers, and includes new experimental studies that illustrate how stereotypic beliefs about rape affect perceptions of victim blame and perpetrator culpability. The final part of the book discusses strategies to suppress the impact of rape stereotypes and promote the data-driven appraisal of sexual assault complaints.
